SIKADURO AND BALD HEAD SLAPPING
Unusual video becomes viral and generates hundreds of funny local copycats in various countries
In mid-2012 a curious video appeared on the internet. Set in Africa, the scene showed a priest and his assistant performing a strange ritual on a believer. The crouched shaved head patient has his head sprinkled with some white substance. Then the patient starts to be repeatedly slapped on the head while the celebrant repeats an African mantra:
” Odi maimale “, says the healer and the patient repeats.
” Baba di memen di paton ” , complements the celebrant, his prayer being repeated by the patient.
Obviously the spelling of the mantra should not be this, but phonetically it approximates what is said.
Take a look at the unusual video:
The ritual is part of the Sikaduro belief, in Ghana, Africa, and the patient’s goal in this case is to get a job and get rich. The priest belongs to the Juju cult, a sort of witchcraft or black magic that is much feared and respected in the region.
In the video, the slapping becomes increasingly violent until the patient starts crying, poor guy. At this point, according to Ghanaian citizen Quophi Aletse, the priest interrupts the session and gives a hint that the patient should not cry. And the sequence of violent slapping continues .
The video was shown on a Nigerian TV comedy program. Someone captured it and posted it on YouTube. What happened next was totally surprising: users in several countries started to copy the ritual as a joke and posted their videos on the same site, people from Turkey, China, various Arabic speaking countries, Mexico, Poland, Greece and others that I plan to add here later.
Enjoy the collection of copycats, which took me hours and hours of research. And I keep searching for new copycats. And, please, if you produce a video on the “Odi maimale. Baba di memen di paton” style, please send me the link to so that I can enrich the collection , ok?
Turkey
The first country that caught my attention was Turkey, with its numerous videos with the theme “afrikada migren tedavisi” ( African cure for migraine) .

China
Curious about Chinese interpretations is that in almost all of them the “victim” wears a helmet.
